Born in New York in 1956, Rita Maas received her BFA in Photographic Studies from the School of Visual Arts in 1981. Shortly thereafter she established a successful commercial studio in New York, NY shooting award winning campaigns for major advertising and editorial clients. She earned her MFA in Visual Arts at Lesley University College of Art and Design in 2013. .
   Maas’ work concerns itself with the conditions surrounding photography and examines photographic materials and processes while reflecting upon themes of reproduction, representation, perception, and interpretation. Her fine art work has been awarded numerous honors, most recently receiving an Honorable Mention from the jury of the prestigious Sidney Zuber Photography Award. In the fall and winter of 2017/2018 her series Residual Ink Drawings were showcased as Featured Artist in the Spot Gallery at the Katonah Museum of Art. In addition, works from Residual Ink Drawings were included in the exhibition, Trace, Copy, Render, curated by Claire Sykes of Circuit Gallery in Toronto, Canada in the fall of 2016. In 2010 Maas was named by curator Dr. Rebecca Senf as one of “The Ten Most Exciting Photographers I Learned About This Year,” and was invited by Senf to exhibit works at the Norton Gallery at Phoenix Art Museum in 2015 and 2017. Her work has been exhibited at the Anzenberger Gallery in Vienna, the International Photography Festival, GuatePhoto2015 in Guatemala City, Guatemala, the Griffin Museum of Photography in Winchester MA, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Houston TX, Silver Eye Center of Photography in Pittsburgh PA, Filter Photo Space in Chicago, IL, and Houston Center of Photography in Houston TX, among several others.
   Maas’ work is held in the collections of Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Lishui Museum of Photography in Lishui, China and the Griffin Museum of Photography in Winchester, MA. as well as several corporate and private collections.
   Maas has recently acted as Visiting Professor at Rochester Institute of Technology and served as Visiting Artist and Adjunct Professor at College of Staten Island, CUNY.
